Normally, I wouldn’t blog about serious topics. I try to keep things light hearted and up beat, but I really wanted to write about the shooting at the Dark Knight Rises premiere in Aurora, CO.

For those of you who don’t know. A man opened fire on an audience during the midnight premiere of said film, killing 12 people and injuring many others. He had tear gas, an semi-automatic assault rifle, a shotgun, and two glocks, though not all were used in the attack. In addition, he booby trapped his apartment to blow up if entered. He also referred to himself as the Joker.

First, I think of the victims. It’s a terribly tragedy, the largest shooting with deaths and casualties on American soil that has nothing to do with war. They were all innocent victims of something no one could have predicted to happen. My thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families, of the victims lost and those who were injured.

No one could have seen this coming. It was out of the blue; there were no warning signs. There are psychotic people out there, and there’s no way we can control them all. But there are ways we can at least try to prevent these things from happening.

Head’s up, this might get a little opinionated. Then again, this is a blog.

I am all for the right to bare arms. Everyone has a right to protect themselves and their families, as well as hunt in season. But when someone buys an assault rifle, they aren’t looking to protect: they’re looking to kill. You don’t need an assault rifle to protect yourself from intruders. There are dozens of other types of guns that are perfectly acceptable for the job.

The fact that someone can legally buy any type of automatic gun is not okay. It allows for situations like this to unfold. If this murderer hadn’t gotten this assault rifle, would he still have attacked people? Probably, because he’s a psychopath. But the fact that he owned one legally gave him the opportunity for this kind of attack.

Gun laws need to change. They have for a while, but I think this disaster will finally give it the incentive it needs to go somewhere. It can’t happen overnight, but it needs to happen in the near future, or massacres and murders will continue to rise. We as a people are beginning to realize that there’s a problem, and unbeknownst to some, we are the solution. It’s up to us to help protect our country as a whole and our loved ones, without using guns.

We’re fighting wars over seas, but there are plenty on our home turf that we can help win.

The hardest thing to do in this world is to live in it. So let’s make it easier.
